Work Experience
Review and Evaluation-Assignment
By Dylan Feeney
Introduction:
Hello my name is Dylan Feeney and this is my work experience review and evaluation of all the part time jobs I did over the week I got off from my PLC Art and Design course to find a part time job and get a feeling of what it would be like to work in the real world for the first time. I found this assignment extremely helpful because I had just left secondary school when I applied for a spot on the PLC course and had no previous work experience so this assignment gave me the chance to gain work experience in the field of work I wanted to do. With the help of my tutor on my course we looked at places in town that would take me on for some part time work in places like art galleries, craft shops and making props for stage performances like musicals or plays. I went out into town and went around to all the suggested places I was given and managed to get some work in the model art gallery in Sligo town. I also managed to find work on my own rather than depend on the suggestions that were given to me like the invigilateing I did up in the model art gallery. Because of this I managed to get work making props for the Hawks well theatre performance of the wizard of Oz and I also helped clean up an art exhibition in the model art gallery. This is my response to all the work I did in these places of work.
An honest evaluation of overall performance-
How did I do? :
For this honest evaluation of my overall performance I have decided to give you a look at what my employers thought of my work for them within the time I spent with them. How I will do this is take the pros and cons from the supervisor's reports of each place I worked for and let you see there feedback to me and in doing so giving you an un-biased report on how well I did through their eyes.
Supervisor's report number one: The Model art gallery
Invigilating, Supervisor: Eve Huahats.
Brief description of work undertaken by candidate: "Dylan has good social skills and is pleasant with the public. His work was mainly invigilating."
Any comments or suggestions on work experience arrangements:
"Dylan has a good interest in art. He is enthusiastic about working here at the model."
Supervisor's report number two: Sligo Musical Society
Supervisor: Jean O'Connell.
Brief description of work undertaken by candidate:
"Painting of sets and props. Making props and parts of sets."
Any comments or suggestions on work experience arrangements:
"Availability limited, 4-6 pm from Friday to Wednesday"
Supervisor's report number three: Model Studio Artists
Gallery room, Supervisor: Sue Mams Cleaver.
Brief description of work undertaken by candidate:
"Students painted the entire gallery space. It had been filled with text from floor to ceiling. Dylan also spent an extra day scrubbing paint off the gallery floor."
These are all the comments that were given back to me via supervisors reports and I believe they speak for themselves when it comes to how well I got on during my work placement.
Was the job what I expected? :
Yes I find that the jobs I got were completely what I expected them to be or sometimes better than what I expected them to be like. For example during my time with the Sligo musical society I had no Idea that I would get the opportunity to try out my crafting skills by making masks for the actors that took part in the play the wizard of Oz. At the same time though other jobs I did were completely what I expected them to be like painting in the model art gallery and doing invigilating witch is minding paintings and making sure they are safe in an art gallery.
Could I do the Job in the future? What further qualifications, experience will I need?.
I think I could see myself doing prop making in the future, I really enjoyed it and I find that I'm good at it so that goes hand in hand, plus I don't see it as work. I see it as a fun process, although to make a career out of it I would have to become better at my craft and advance my skills and understanding of how to make certain props or what sort of materials work best for what type of props I'm making. I don't think that I'd like to do invigilating in the future though because you don't get much out of it but I could see myself doing it in my spare time. Also painting art show rooms doesn't have much reward either so I guess I wouldn't do it in the future either.
Did any other modules from the art course help me in my work experience? :
Yes I found that sculpture helped me in a lot of ways when it came to creating props for the Sligo musical society's performance of the wizard of Oz. Sculpture was very useful when it came to making mask props for the show too. Nothing else really assisted me when it came to my work experience assignment. I never had to use my other skills in invigilating or in paint an art gallery show room. So all in all it was just sculpture that was a help to me, although I do think if I was given the chance to find something else for work experience maybe I could use some of my other skills I learned from my modules.
How did I cope with meeting new people, any criticism, and any conflict? :
I think I coped very well with meeting new people during my work experience module, it was a good experience all in all and there most likely was criticism but it wasn't anything that offended me or stuck with me or anything like that. I'd safely say I took any criticism that was given to me very well. There was no conflict at all in any place I worked and I'm happy to say that everything went well enough for me during my work experience module.
My reaction to the workplace Supervisors report. Was it fair? :
Yes I think all my supervisors' reports from each place I worked at like the model, Sligo drama society and the model artists were very fair and I agree with them a hundred present. My reaction to the supervisors report was a good one, I was very happy and proud of my result and the comments I got back from the supervisors and I am very happy for doing fifteen days in total witch is five more than what is required to just pass so I was very happy with my result and the supervisors reports.
Conclusion:
To sum all this up I'd have to say I enjoyed this work experience assignment and it gave me the chance to learn about different jobs I could go for and get and do and what sort of skills I'd need to go further on in those jobs such as prop making. Working on making props was the best part of my whole work experience assignment and I hope to be doing more prop making in the future. I didn't mind doing invigilating for the model art gallery and I would do it again but not full time and I guess the same could be said for painting art show rooms. I liked meeting new people and going to new places and seeing how things work for the first time since leaving secondary school. I was very happy with my supervisor reports and very happy with how this project turned out, I just hope this review and evaluation shows it.
