Sligo VEC
Day one:
23rd of Sep 2011
I was hired by Cara McGinley to help her make props for the VEC's wards night in the strand bar in strand hill. Cara McGinley got me and a few of my classmates to help her make props and masks for the VEC's awards day that was Oscar's themed. Cana brought in some materials for us all to use such as mask templates, feathers, glitter, car bored, gold and silver spray paint. We began to make props at nine and finished up at around six that same evening. Cara was happy with the work we did and the props we made and asked me and one other student to perform lmiming and present our work at the wards the next night.

Day two:
24th of Sep 2011
I arrived out at the strand bar in strand hill at around nine that evening with the other student asked to come out and met Cara McGinley there who asked us both to help welcome people into the bar where the event was taking place. After about 15 minutes of that we presented or work to the people who had come to the event and then after that we left and the event was a success. Cara seemed very happy with the work we did that evening.

The Model Art Gallery, Sligo
Day one:
Today was my first day Invidualating at the model art gallery. I met a woman called eve at the model who worked there and she brought me up to the Niland gallery which was to be the gallery I would be stationed in to look after. Eve told me what to do if someone asked about the paintings and that if anyone was being rude or uncontrollable that I should leave and get help at the main desk down stairs although this never happened thankfully. The rest of the day was uneventfully apart from the odd person coming in that day. I was not asked any questions by visitors that day so I just left when my time was up to look after the Gallery.
Day two:
Today was just as uneventful as my first day. I just sat in a chair all day and watched the paintings as a few people came in and out of the gallery. I made sure no one touched the paintings or anything like that but apart from that I didn't do much else.

Day three:
Today  a group of people asked me a few questions about the paintings and I was more than happy to help answer their questions then after that I took my spot back on the chair and didn't do much else that day after that.
Day four:
Today I was talking to a few random visitors at different times that day and walked around the gallery getting a closer look at some of the work on display their like Jack B Yates's illustrations of the adventures of red harren witch I thought was very good. I think there my favorite piece of art work on display there.
Day five:
Today was very uneventful so I just decided to sketch away on my sketch book that I had with me. No one came into the gallery today but eve did call in to see how I was getting on. We chatted for a bit but then she went back to her work and later that evening I went home.
Day six:
Today would be my last day with the old paintings before a new exhibit moved in and replaced the old one. A lot of people came in today and chatted to me and asked me questions about the model and its paintings. I was happy to get up and walk around and tell them what I knew about the model and its works. Later after a long day working I went home
Day seven:
The new exhibit opened up today and it was done by the young model group that is based within the model art gallery it's self. I know a few of the people that helped set it up and even my boyfriend took part in the creation of the exhibit. A few people came in to look at the exhibit and I told them what little I knew about it when they asked me questions about it. After that I left and went home for the day.
Day eight:
Today was very uneventful; no one came in to look at the exhibit so I just sat there in the gallery and sketched a few things. I got a bit board and just walked around the gallery. I almost got locked in the gallery but luckily I got out before it closed and I went home.

(Sub) Text Exhibit in the Model Art Gallery

Day one:
Me and two other students who were hired by our tutor Sarah Stevens to paint over the walls of her exhibit space to make room for a new exhibit to move in. we all arrived up at the model at nine that morning and met Sarah there who gave us paint for the walls and sheets to put on the floor in case of any spills and then we got to work. We took a break at one then came back to work and got half of the job done then left when our day was up.
Day two:
we all arrived up at the model at nine that morning again and got straight back to work painting over the walls. Like the day before we got a break then finished the job and went home for the day. Before I left however Sarah asked me to return the next day and clean up the paint drops on the floor for her. I agreed and then left for home.
Day three:
It was just me on my own today washing paint off the floor. Sarah came to check up on me and I got a small break then returned to work and finished up and went home for the day. Sarah said she was very happy with the job I did.

Work Experience
Review and Evaluation-Assignment
By Dylan Feeney

Introduction:
Hello my name is Dylan Feeney and this is my work experience review and evaluation of all the part time jobs I did over the week I got off from my PLC Art and Design course to find a part time job and get a feeling of what it would be like to work in the real world for the first time. I found this assignment extremely helpful because I had just left secondary school when I applied for a spot on the PLC course and had no previous work experience so this assignment gave me the chance to gain work experience in the field of work I wanted to do. With the help of my tutor on my course we looked at places in town that would take me on for some part time work in places like art galleries, craft shops and making props for stage performances like musicals or plays. I went out into town and went around to all the suggested places I was given and managed to get some work in the model art gallery in Sligo town. I also managed to find work on my own rather than depend on the suggestions that were given to me like the invigilateing I did up in the model art gallery. Because of this I managed to get work making props for the Hawks well theatre performance of the wizard of Oz and I also helped clean up an art exhibition in the model art gallery. This is my response to all the work I did in these places of work.

An honest evaluation of overall performance-
How did I do? :

For this honest evaluation of my overall performance I have decided to give you a look at what my employers thought of my work for them within the time I spent with them. How I will do this is take the pros and cons from the supervisor's reports of each place I worked for and let you see there feedback to me and in doing so giving you an un-biased report on how well I did through their eyes.
Supervisor's report number one: The Model art gallery
Invigilating, Supervisor: Eve Huahats.

Brief description of work undertaken by candidate: "Dylan has good social skills and is pleasant with the public. His work was mainly invigilating."

Any comments or suggestions on work experience arrangements:
"Dylan has a good interest in art. He is enthusiastic about working here at the model."

Supervisor's report number two: Sligo Musical Society
Supervisor: Jean O'Connell.

Brief description of work undertaken by candidate:
"Painting of sets and props. Making props and parts of sets."

Any comments or suggestions on work experience arrangements:
"Availability limited, 4-6 pm from Friday to Wednesday"
Supervisor's report number three: Model Studio Artists
Gallery room, Supervisor: Sue Mams Cleaver.

Brief description of work undertaken by candidate:
"Students painted the entire gallery space. It had been filled with text from floor to ceiling. Dylan also spent an extra day scrubbing paint off the gallery floor."

These are all the comments that were given back to me via supervisors reports and I believe they speak for themselves when it comes to how well I got on during my work placement.

Was the job what I expected? :
Yes I find that the jobs I got were completely what I expected them to be or sometimes better than what I expected them to be like. For example during my time with the Sligo musical society I had no Idea that I would get the opportunity to try out my crafting skills by making masks for the actors that took part in the play the wizard of Oz. At the same time though other jobs I did were completely what I expected them to be like painting in the model art gallery and doing invigilating witch is minding paintings and making sure they are safe in an art gallery.

Could I do the Job in the future? What further qualifications, experience will I need?.

I think I could see myself doing prop making in the future, I really enjoyed it and I find that I'm good at it so that goes hand in hand, plus I don't see it as work. I see it as a fun process, although to make a career out of it I would have to become better at my craft and advance my skills and understanding of how to make certain props or what sort of materials work best for what type of props I'm making. I don't think that I'd like to do invigilating in the future though because you don't get much out of it but I could see myself doing it in my spare time. Also painting art show rooms doesn't have much reward either so I guess I wouldn't do it in the future either.

Did any other modules from the art course help me in my work experience? :

Yes I found that sculpture helped me in a lot of ways when it came to creating props for the Sligo musical society's performance of the wizard of Oz. Sculpture was very useful when it came to making mask props for the show too. Nothing else really assisted me when it came to my work experience assignment. I never had to use my other skills in invigilating or in paint an art gallery show room. So all in all it was just sculpture that was a help to me, although I do think if I was given the chance to find something else for work experience maybe I could use some of my other skills I learned from my modules.

How did I cope with meeting new people, any criticism, and any conflict? :
I think I coped very well with meeting new people during my work experience module, it was a good experience all in all and there most likely was criticism but it wasn't anything that offended me or stuck with me or anything like that. I'd safely say I took any criticism that was given to me very well. There was no conflict at all in any place I worked and I'm happy to say that everything went well enough for me during my work experience module.

My reaction to the workplace Supervisors report. Was it fair? :

Yes I think all my supervisors' reports from each place I worked at like the model, Sligo drama society and the model artists were very fair and I agree with them a hundred present. My reaction to the supervisors report was a good one, I was very happy and proud of my result and the comments I got back from the supervisors and I am very happy for doing fifteen days in total witch is five more than what is required to just pass so I was very happy with my result and the supervisors reports.

Conclusion:
To sum all this up I'd have to say I enjoyed this work experience assignment and it gave me the chance to learn about different jobs I could go for and get and do and what sort of skills I'd need to go further on in those jobs such as prop making. Working on making props was the best part of my whole work experience assignment and I hope to be doing more prop making in the future. I didn't mind doing invigilating for the model art gallery and I would do it again but not full time and I guess the same could be said for painting art show rooms. I liked meeting new people and going to new places and seeing how things work for the first time since leaving secondary school. I was very happy with my supervisor reports and very happy with how this project turned out, I just hope this review and evaluation shows it.
